What a history report shows
What is on file for a car, from the records of the country it was sold in.
Accidents and damage
Reported crashes, the damage recorded and, where insurers filed it, how bad it was. A car sold as accident-free often is not.
The real mileage
Odometer readings taken at services, inspections and sales, in order. A reading that goes down is a rolled-back clock.
Title and write-offs
Salvage, flood, theft-recovery and insurance write-off records, where they exist. These are the cars that are cheap for a reason.
Service and maintenance
Workshop visits and what was done, where the market keeps them. For Chinese cars this is the strongest part of the record.
Owners and use
How many owners, and whether it was private, a taxi, a rental or a fleet car. Use tells you as much as age.
Auction records
For cars from Japan, the auction listings for the chassis number: the grade the inspector gave, the mileage and the photos the sheet carried.
Where the car is from decides what we can find
Each market keeps different records, so each report covers different ground. Tell us the number and we show you which reports fit that car.
USA & Canada
Carfax and AutoCheck
The fullest history there is: accidents, title brands, odometer readings, owners, service records and auction sales.
China
Maintenance and insurance records
Workshop visits, what was repaired and insurance claims, from the Chinese records. This is the market most dealers here cannot check at all.
Japan
Auction records by chassis number
The auction sheets a car appeared in: the inspector's grade, the mileage on the day and any damage noted.
Korea
Accident and ownership records
Insurance accident history and owner changes from the Korean records.
Europe
Mileage and history records
Mileage readings and recorded history for European cars, including the German and Polish records.
A report can only show what was reported. An accident nobody filed is in no database in the world — which is why a clean report is good news, not a guarantee.
VIN or chassis number — where to find it
It is on the car and on every piece of paper that came with it.
A 17-character VIN
Letters and numbers, no I, O or Q. On the car it is at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, in the driver's door jamb and usually in the engine bay.
Or your papers
The VIN is on the registration, the insurance certificate, the bill of lading, the export certificate and the dealer's listing. Any of them will do.
Or a Japanese chassis number
Cars sold in Japan carry a chassis number instead — ZRE212-6001234, a model code and a serial. Type it with the dash, exactly as it is written.
Not sure you have read it right? Type it in and we will tell you the make, model and year we find for it before you pay for anything.
How it works
Four steps, and nothing is bought until you say so.
Type the number
The VIN or the chassis number. We tell you what car it is, free, before you choose anything.
Choose your report
We show the reports that fit that car, what each one covers and what it costs.
Pay
Mobile money or card. You see the price first.
Confirm the number, then get the report
We show you the number and the car once more, and you can still fix it. Only when you confirm do we go and get the report — usually a few minutes later it is on your screen.
If there is nothing on file, you get your money back
Some cars have no records at all. If your report comes back empty, our team refunds you — which is why we ask for a phone number before you pay.
A clean report is not an empty one. A car with no accidents on file is good news, and it is not refunded.
Vehicle history questions
Which cars can I check?
Cars from the USA and Canada, China, Japan, Korea and Europe. Which records exist depends on where the car is from: North American cars have the fullest history, Chinese cars have maintenance and insurance records, and for Japanese cars we search auction records. You choose the report that matches the car before you pay.
Where do I find the VIN?
The VIN is 17 characters of letters and numbers. On the car it is on a plate where the dashboard meets the windscreen on the driver's side, on a sticker in the driver's door jamb, and usually on the engine bay. On paper it is on the registration, the insurance certificate, the bill of lading and the dealer's listing. It never contains the letters I, O or Q.
My car is from Japan — what number do I need?
Japanese cars sold in Japan have a chassis number rather than a 17-character VIN. It looks like ZRE212-6001234: a model code, a dash and a serial number. It is on the export certificate and on the car's own plate. Type it exactly as it is written, with the dash.
How long does it take?
Usually a few minutes. Some reports take longer, and a few markets can take up to a day. The page shows you each part of your report as it arrives, so you never have to wonder whether something is still coming.
What if no records are found?
It happens, and it is not always bad news — a car with no accident records on file is a car with no accident records on file. If a report comes back with nothing in it at all, our team refunds you. That is why we ask for a phone number before you pay.
Can I change the VIN after paying?
Yes, up to three times, and this is the whole reason the service works the way it does. Paying does not buy the report: it buys the right to press ‘Get my report’. Before you press it we show you the number you typed and the car we found for it, and if it is wrong you fix it. Nothing is bought until you confirm.
How do I pay?
By mobile money or card. You see the price before you pay, and you pay once per report.
