A real problem, with no easy answer — until now

Demand for a quick way to check car import duties is overwhelming. Yet the tools to do it have stayed slow, manual, and out of reach for the everyday buyer.

Surprise duties at the port

Buyers commit to a car, then get blindsided by a duty bill far higher than they budgeted for — sometimes derailing the whole purchase.

Slow, opaque estimates

Getting a reliable figure means chasing agents, waiting hours or days, and still not understanding how the number was reached.

No simple self-serve tool

There has never been an easy, trustworthy way for an ordinary buyer to check a car's import duty on their own, in plain language.

Car import duty in Ghana: your questions

How is car import duty calculated in Ghana?

Ghana Customs (GRA) values the car from its make, model, year and specification, then adds shipping and insurance to reach the CIF value. Import duty is charged on that value, followed by VAT, NHIL, GETFund and other levies. Older cars also attract an overage penalty. Our estimate follows the same steps.

What details do I need to check the duty?

The car's make, model, year, trim, engine size, fuel type and the country it is shipping from. The chassis number (VIN) helps us fill most of that in for you. If you don't have every detail, we'll ask for what's missing as we go.

Is the estimate the final amount GRA will charge?

No. It is an estimate built the way Customs values cars, so you can budget and compare before you buy. The final figure is set by GRA Customs when the car is assessed at the port, and exchange rates move in between.

Is there a penalty for cars older than 10 years?

Yes. Cars over 10 years old attract an overage penalty on top of the normal duty, and it rises with age. Your estimate includes it where it applies.

Can I check the duty on ICUMS myself?

ICUMS is Customs' own system and is built for clearing agents. Our Duty Check gives you the same kind of breakdown in plain language, as a PDF you can keep, without needing an agent.

How long does it take?

A few minutes. Describe the car, answer a few questions and pay, and your estimate appears on the page with a PDF to download. A copy goes to your WhatsApp too.
